East Grinstead Town Council occupies East Court Mansion, set within the grounds of East Court Estate.
The house was built in 1769, by John Cranston and later became the home of The Reverend C W P Crawfurd, who was responsible for a great many philanthropic deeds in and around East Grinstead. The house was later purchased, enlarged and the grounds landscaped by Ernest Cooper to what you see today. During the Second World War, the house was used as a barracks and training ground for soldiers prior to deployment and in 1945, East Court was sold to the East Grinstead Urban District Council, eventually becoming East Grinstead Town Council in 1967.
