31 High Street, East Grinstead, West Sussex RH19 3AF

The name Agora comes from the Ancient Greeks. An Agora was a large market and meeting place. People would gather for a variety of activities, they would congregate for coffee, wines and of course the obligatory meze meals.

Politics and other affairs were aslo discussed here, they could also purchase a wide variety of goods. The Agora had its cobblers who repaired and made shoes for sale, it had its coffee bars and eating houses, there were also Horses and slaves displayed there. It was also the meeting place for the Bankers and also used for parliamentary procedures.

We chose the name Agora for our Restaurant, because being situated in East Grinstead we feel that it has a simillarity with an Agora. East Grinstead is steeped in history and is market town as well. The Restaurant is located in the oldest part of the town in the High Street. From the Medieval times right upto the 1960s the High street held a cattle market every week along with food market.

Farmers, Traders and towns folk would gather in the High street to carry on their business, people would come from the surrounding villages to sell and purchase goods. and also enjoy a drink in the Crown Hotel which was also used by travellers on the way to the south coast, The High street is mentioned in the Doomsday book, it boasts some of the oldest builings in the UK and also has one of the most Haunted Properties in the UK.
